Annapolis, Maryland

Annapolis MD Real Estate, Annapolis area and Community Information

Annapolis, Maryland, is the capital of the state and the county seat of Anne Arundel County. It lies 25 miles south of Baltimore and 30 miles east of the nation's capital. The community, situated along the shores of Chesapeake Bay, is now home to about 38,000 citizens. The United Stated Naval Academy is located in Annapolis.

Puritan émigrés from Virginia came here and settled on the northern side of the Severn River in 1649. The community was named Providence. They later relocated to the southern shore because the harbor was better protected. It was eventually named Anne Arundel's Towne, after the wife of the Lord of Baltimore. The name "Annapolis" was later chosen to honor Princess Anne of Norway and Denmark. It was incorporated in 1708. In the 18th century, the community became known for oyster-packing, sailmaking and boatbuilding. After the Treaty of Paris was signed in 1783, Annapolis became the capital of the United States for a short time.
