History

From 1869 to 1873, the Baltimore & Potomac Railroad constructed a rail line from southern Maryland to Baltimore. A railroad junction here quickly grew into a settlement initially known as Huntington City. Oden Bowie was the president of the railroad and a former state governor. Huntington City was renamed Bowie in 1880. Railroad transportation evolved into sophisticated interurban passenger service in the early 20th century as hourly service was offered in the Baltimore-Annapolis-Washington corridor.

One of Bowie's most popular parks is the 85-acre Allen Pond Park. The amphitheater hosts a diverse array of concerts, plays and other performances. There's also an ice arena, skate park, lighted ballfields, lighted basketball court, fitness station and playgrounds. Visitors can rent boats and head out onto the fishing pond. The 10-acre body of water is regularly stocked with fish.
