Crofton MD Real Estate, Crofton area and Community Information
Crofton, Maryland, is a master planned community centrally located between Baltimore, Annapolis and Washington D.C. The community was first developed in 1964 after the Crofton Corporation purchased 1,600 acres of land here. In the half-century since, the population has grown to include about 30,000 residents. As recently as 1990, there were fewer than 13,000 people in Crofton.
Those of European descent first arrived in the 1660s. Early settlers cleared forests and planted tobacco, which they exported to England. It was not until 1772 when the first school opened in Crofton. In 1927, the so-called Defense Highway linked Washington D.C. and the Naval Academy in Annapolis.
Parks and Recreation
Those with Crofton properties can enjoy the many features of Crofton Park. A 2.24-mile paved trail serves bikers, boarders, hikers and rollerbladers. Five ballfields include one that is lighted. One lighted multipurpose field is also maintained here. Fishing is yet another recreational option, and there are also playground and picnic facilities.
Attractions and Activities

Crofton residents will find a number of great events to attend just to the south in Bowie. Every June, Bowiefest brings live music on two stages and a business expo to Allen Pond Park. One highlight of the festival is the rib eating contest. Arts and crafts exhibits and barked cuisine add to the festive event. In October, the same park hosts the multi-cultural Bowie International Festival. Once again, numerous live bands entertain attendees as they sample food items from around the world.
